Do not underestimate the potentials of animals either big or small. Do you have a favorite pet at home? The dog is commonly known as “the man’s best friend.” What is your favorite creature in the wild animals? What kind of animal captures your attention at the zoo? Bernie’s Story: Part 1 is a historical fiction written by Hubert Spann that emphasizes the proper treatment for animals.

Bernie was left by his mother with his grandparents since he was a baby. His grandparents will put him in the crib when they are working on the farm. A wolf notices him and touches his soft skin. The wolf found a new playmate in the crib. Is the wolf too dangerous for Bernie? Why did Bernie learn to communicate with the wild animals? His animal friends make him grow up responsible and smart as early as 4 years old.

One day, there was a problem that makes him sad. Why did the white people discriminate the abilities of the Negro people? Bernie’s animal friends come to the rescue. How? How could Bernie acquire power over their oppressors? Is it because of his animal friends? He is also wise and smart. But he is not allowed to defend himself since he was a Negro boy. How can he defend himself? Why does he feel secure when some animals around him? Fortunately, he found something that makes his life comfortable over his oppressors.

Knowledge is a big help to win because it enhances self-esteem when someone is at risk. This book also shows slavery of the Negro people and their fighting skills to win over their opponents. Negro’s faith in God encourages me. I like the most when Bernie acknowledges God every day. He never forgets to pray when he is in good condition. He always remembers that aid will come when everything goes hard.

I appreciate the author's plot of the story. There are some people who know how to communicate with the animals. I salute their ability. Hubert portrays a friendly wild animal. I like the way he depicts friendship with the animals.

The book has 52 chapters, but the story gives excitement. The plot of the story flows well that drives me to read it further. Bernie’s amazing conversation with the animals gives excitement to the reader. The grammar is good, but I found a few sentences that start with a small letter word, “he” instead of “He.” A few typos also occur, “he into hr”. Despite the typos, it does not distract me from reading this book. However, I don’t like any sex scenes because it might encourage a teenager to do it since Bernie’s character is young.

I will still rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I like the way how the author illustrates kindness to the animals. Hubert also depicts fairness in all walks of life. The book is suited for all people who have pets at home. A person who likes animals will also enjoy the story that makes me eager to read the next story of Bernie.
