The Painting: A Novel Based On A True Story by Michael C Reid is an entertaining book about family, friendship, mystery, and perseverance. Set in Cuba with the famous dictator Fidel Castro as its ruler, the book delves into the story of Roberto and Carlos, two brothers who would venture into any menial job to make a few bucks. They help an older man named Julio move out of his old house. The elder then leaves them a painting, which drives intrigue in the brothers, who originally had a cash payment for their efforts.
 
After a little research on the painting, they discovered its painter, Carlos Sobrino, an award-winning artist in Cuba. The brothers believe they are onto something and that this painting could be worth a lot. Will the El Saxofonista painting by Carlos Sobrino be Carlos and Roberto's ticket out of poverty? Or will it only lead them into more trouble? Read this book to find out. 
 
I always like books that revolve around art, whether fictional or not. The idea that this book is based on a true story makes it much better. I like how the book portrays Cuba during the era of Fidel Castro in detail. The abject poverty of its citizens, aided by the corruption of its government, was well depicted. The book also mixes Spanish well into the dialogue, giving the narrative a more authentic feel.
 
There isn't anything to dislike about this book. I enjoyed every part of its narrative. The book contains a few profanities but doesn't incorporate any explicit sexual content to tell its story. I found flawlessness in the editing of this book, as there was no occasion throughout my reading where I encountered a typographical or grammatical error. Because of these positive reasons, I deem it fit to award this book a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to people who enjoy historical narratives that intrigue and revolve around art.
