In this phenomenal work of fiction blended with military history, author Curtis Burdick presents an ingenious explanation for the reason behind General Patton's period of absence during World War II. The General was captured! How could such a thing happen, and to a three star General, no less? Where is he and what will happen if he isn't found? These questions and their answers will keep readers glued to every page as they follow Army Ranger Captain Peter Pizzio and his men through impossible undertakings and hair-raising skirmishes in efforts to locate and rescue the General, all while Pizzio undisguisedly loathes the man.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book for several reasons in addition to its gripping action and suspense. The author’s attention to historical and military operations detail appealed strongly, as it was quite evident a great deal of research and verifications went into constructing its narrative. As an example, I was delighted when General Eisenhower tapped Winston Churchill’s then-clandestine Ministry for assistance with preventing the Nazi Germans in Italy from learning that Patton was missing. Development of the characters throughout the narrative was outstanding, as I found the characters to be not only colorful and engaging, but authentic as well. It was easy to ‘see’ and ‘hear’ the characters acting and sounding as their true-life counterparts would have. Subsequently, it was totally plausible for the tale to end as the author depicted it.
The entire account feels wholly believable, from the historical details of a suspected ruse all the way through its rousing page-turning action, and I could not detect any editing errors. Fiction lovers, history buffs and military enthusiasts will find this chronicle irresistible
I give five full stars and earnestly hope to see it made into a movie, where it is certain to be hailed by those who enjoy movies along the lines of The Devil’s Brigade and Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
