This is a very exciting and Adventurous novel by Curtis Stephen. The book revolves around Joshua Cabot, A Harvard-educated man who was previously involved in metallurgy. Joshua's life gets turned around as he travels by sea to be involved in gold mining & exploration during the California Gold Rush era. Joshua Cabot who has a health condition becomes ensnared in the harsh realities of life aboard a merchant ship. The book is a wonderful blend of adventure, history, and personal transformation making it an engrossing read for history and fiction lovers.

Joshua is forced to leave his true love Martha to embark on the journey with the hope of a brighter future when he returns. Joshua faces some pretty intense challenges on the journey but his resilience and his Scientific knowledge help him survive and grow into a stronger person. One of the coolest things about this book is how it brings history to life. You learn about the California Gold Rush, the tough life of sailors, and what it was like to live in those times.

There are many things I like about this book but I'll just say some, the thing I like most about this book is how real the author makes the book feel. The author gave very detailed descriptions that it felt like I was watching a movie. The information and the facts contained in the book are proof that a lot of research was done before and during the writing of this book. This research work coupled with the author's beautiful writing style makes the book exceptional.

I enjoyed every part of the book. I spotted very few errors in the book which shows it was professionally edited. That said, Some parts of the book feel a bit slow because of all the descriptions. If you’re someone who likes the action to keep moving, you might feel like skipping ahead in a few places. But stick with it—it’s worth it!

Finally, Shanghai’d by Curtis Stephen is a wonderful masterpiece I would recommend for historical fiction lovers, lovers of adventure and maritime tales. I will rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it's detailed, it's intriguing and it's exceptionally written.
