Shanghai'd by Curtis Stephen Burdick is a book about the gold rush that occurred during and after the Mexican-American War. James Marshall discovers a gold rush, and this frightens him. He decides to get the military involved for safety. Soon, word gets out about this gold mine, and people begin sailing in from all over the world to try to make a fortune for themselves. Jooshua Cabot, a graduate from Harvard, is sent to open an asset for a big gold company. Things do not go smoothly as he encounters many challenges. Will Joshua be successful in the end? I enjoyed reading this book, and I like how the author was able to write this fiction while also including the real-life events of history. There was a war, and the gold rush happened around that time. There was also a treaty that helped to settle the war. I like how the author was able to weave fiction while not changing the most important parts of history. It made me go back to scout for the actual facts of the events that happened. I thank the author for writing this book because it encouraged me to read history more.

Joshua's character was my favorite. I enjoyed reading about his character development. He really went through a lot. You could tell that he did a lot of soul searching and personal development. I like that he was flawed; it showed that nobody is perfect at the end of the day. I rate this book five out of five stars. I didn't find any grammatical errors in the review. This shows that it was grammatically well edited. I recommend this book to everyone that loves reading about history. They will enjoy reading this book. It shows the vast history that countries share with themselves.
