Circumstances of War by Robert John Gardner is a riveting story of the Holocaust in Munich, Germany and the terrible treatment of those that were imprisoned there. One young man, Aaron Gittelsohn, along with his mother and father, tried to make the best of an awful situation.

It also introduces two twin brothers, Mo and Max Gordon, who were raised in Springfield, Illinois. Before Mo leaves for the war, he falls in love with a beautiful and talented piano player named Janey.

This story spans across a few different locations and specific characters, but they eventually connect through different circumstances.

I did not notice any errors in the editing. It is very evident that this book was professionally edited.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for two reasons - the astounding editing that was done, and the character of Mo Gordon, who showed extreme bravery in the face of a raging war. I must say that he was my favorite character throughout this book.

A few things that stood out to me were: 1) the narrations that the author added after some of the chapters. These were absolutely heart touching and summed up some of the main things that we could take away from certain chapters, 2) the absolute love that Aaron had for his family and his willingness to do what had to be done to ensure their safety, even though life and circumstances were unbelievably hard, and 3) the love that Mo had for Janey and his family and how he always had them on his mind even through the chaos of an ongoing war.

Robert Gardner was also very descriptive, which makes it so easy for it to feel like you could literally be there and feel the emotions along with the characters in the story. This is the kind of book that grips you from the beginning and doesn't let go! I would love to read much more from this author without a doubt. I highly suggest this book to anyone who is interested in historical fiction.
