The book "Hard Times, You Say? Smile, This Is The Great Depression" by R. Leslie Howe is a historical book that shows the struggle of two young men who are in desperate need. The book serves as a guide, taking readers through the time of the Great Depression. The story starts with Gunther Miller III facing a series of struggles and hardships. It affected him so much, leaving him with a slight problem in articulation. While attempting to find a way out of this, he met with Michael, who happened to have gone through the same situation in his fair share of travails. The way they grew into confidants, supporting each other through their struggles and hard times, in spite of their backgrounds, is truly inspiring. Want to know how Gunther and Michael finally achieved their goals? Then read the book "Hard Times, You Say? Smile, This Is The Great Depression" by R. Leslie Howe.

This book portrays historical times. It also shows how beneficial it is to have true friends. Despite the individual differences between both friends, it never weakened their bond; they had each other's back throughout their struggles together. Gunther was strong at heart, bearing and handling the weights with wisdom. Michael was ambitious and able to cope with various situations. Both Gunther and Michael together proved that working together through hard times is a better chance towards breakthrough and overcoming pressure from society. One lesson from this novel is that no differences can stop the power of supportive efforts between one another if the connection between both is true and sincere from the heart. It was amazing as I read the story about Gunther and Michael; how the people of Shanty Town showed them enormous kindness and willingness to help them through their journey.

I like the way the book tells the story of how friendship can be formed even amidst depressing and unlikely situations. The friendship between Gunther and Michael was exemplary, showing how they could count on each other in very difficult times, and despite their differences, like their ages and the backgrounds where they came from, their loyalty and kindness to each other superseded possible misunderstandings that could have stemmed from it. Their bond led to an unforgettable experience.

I didn't find any reason to dislike this book. Every chapter was fascinating. Gunther and Michael were interesting characters; the way the author used them to depict the emotions embedded in the narrative showed a true connection in their brotherhood. Their laid-out history and how they responded to the adversities and depression were also fascinating. Although there were a few grammatical and typographical errors, they didn't alter the flow of my reading experience. I’ll give this book a 5 out of 5 stars; this is because my time spent reading this book was enjoyable. It is suspense-filled and contains inspiring messages that reasonably compensate for its shortcomings. In conclusion, this book is a memorable one and will linger in your mind for quite some time after reading it.

It is amazing when the two most unlikely people to become friends do so and use this friendship to conquer all barriers and hardships before them. I never experienced the hardships that people from the Depression Era did. Reading this book will allow me to experience it without the real pain.
