Shanghai’d by Curtis Stephen Burdick chronicles the thrilling adventures of Joshua Cabot as he travels across countries and oceans on both planned and unplanned journeys. Burdick’s book is steeped in the detailed history of the mid-1800s, and I was very impressed by the extensive research that was clearly undertaken for this novel. The historical phenomenon, for which the book is named, is something I’ve only seen covered once before in any historical fiction book. I am a huge fan of historical fiction, and this was a really great read! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction or even just exciting adventure stories.

Burdick’s book is action-packed from the beginning, with one thrilling event after another that makes it hard to put down! The author also creates compelling characters, and I found myself becoming quite invested in them. I especially appreciate the broad range of ethnicities, ages, and backgrounds amongst the characters, which is a trait that I find many books lack.

I found very little to critique in this book. If I were to say anything, I’d make note of the author’s tendency towards run-on sentences, which occasionally come across as a bit clunky. However, I feel that this is a very minor note and did not take away from the overall experience and enjoyment of reading this book. In fact, immediately after finishing Shanghai’d, I searched online to see if the second book had been written yet. Unfortunately, we will have to wait for now as it has not been released yet, but I have no doubt I will read it once it is!

With its immersive historical details, compelling characters, and exciting plot, I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars. I would definitely recommend Shanghai’d by Curtis Stephen Burdick as your next read!
