The novel ‘Terror in Manila,’ written by Frank Q. Aurillo, Jr, is a wonderful story that every historical fiction fan with a knack for adventure and time travel should read. The author has created an amazing blend of the historic past of the Philippines with the future of science.
The Backdrop of the Story:- the Philippines had long been under the brutal control of Spain, torture and misery being prevalent throughout the region. Then the reign of the Japanese followed, with not much changing. Finally, in 1946, with the aid of the United States, the Philippines became an independent nation. However, they were not in a state to face the Industrial revolution and lagged behind, becoming what was then known as a backward country.
The Plot of the Novel:- Nick is the protagonist of the book. A Philippine scientist who had formerly studied in the United States and London, he wanted to change his country’s past. He wanted to alter the then economic situation in his country, and thus also the future of the Philippines. He believes that the best way to go about this would be to travel back in time and assassinate the High Commissioner of the United States before he declared the Philippines an independent nation, so that the country would remain under the US and face the industrial developments, making it more stable in the future.
Being a student of quantum physics, with the help of his friend Francis, he creates a time machine with an oscillocapacitor that would alter the rate at which the smallest particles of matter oscillate or vibrate by the millionth of a second. The other important component of the machine was the ARS - the Automatic Recall System - which would pull the traveler back to the present time, 48 hours from the moment of travel. This acts as a countdown and constantly keeps us on the edge of our seats, eager to see how much time they have left. The oscillocapacitor is also an interesting scientific concept.
Testing it out was an exhilarating adventure for Nick and Francis. The machine teleported Nick exactly two days back from their present time. The excitement of an impending adventure filled their minds as they were eager to travel back in time and change the history of the Philippines.
Nick decides to time travel to the 48 hours before the Declaration of Independence was announced in the Philippines. The clock starts ticking, for both the past and the future.
During his mission, he undergoes many hurdles and unforeseen circumstances, and the skillful detail and writing is sure to leave the reader hanging onto every word.
Does he survive the mission and alter Philippines’ fate?
Or does he fail and get stuck in a time period when he wasn’t even born?
I will leave that for the readers to ponder.
Final Thoughts:- This is a brilliant story, penned with great care and accuracy. I found it incredibly captivating and thought-provoking, and do believe that it is a must-read for all. This book will appeal to anyone with an interest in history and time-travel.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for the mesmerizing storytelling and world building.
