Are you ready for a unique fantasy story, which combines Celtic mythology and sorcery on a collision course with the Roman empire and their military designs on Britain? If so, then you will love this book as much as I did.

Appollo's Raven by Linnea Tanner is a tale about Catrin, a young warrior princess. Catrin's developing Druidic powers offer her a chance to save her Father's kingdom. Her peril rapidly increases though as she faces the grim prophecy that she will curse her home and family along with her half brother Marrock. Many forces stand in her way including the evil sorceress Agrona and her hidden agenda to steal Catrin's powers, and Marrock and his designs to exact revenge for the banishment from the kingdom he wishes to rule with his dark powers.

As the Roman's take her father and sister to their encampment, and leave in trade the handsome Marcellus, Catrin seems powerless to challenge her overbearing Mother who treats her as a pawn and refuses to listen to her fears about Agrona. This book has so many excellent characters as the author takes her time to share the main characters thoughts and backgrounds. The book delves into the Roman's view of the Celtic people as little more than savages who dabble in strange rituals and worship the wrong Gods. It also shows the Britain's struggle to understand the Roman's subterfuge when they have paid tribute and their King and daughter speak Latin and understand the political environment they are facing.

What I liked the most about this book was the engaging characters and thought given to the historical context. The magical content was exciting and often surprising as Catrin's sight seeing and melding with her Raven frequently happens unexpectedly. Due to the excellent editing and wonderful plot development I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I will be looking to read more in this series soon!

Appollo's Raven would most appeal the mature readers who like fantasy set in a past time. I would not recommend this to sensitive readers due to the sexual content.
