Apollo's Raven is the first book in the series Curse of Clansmen and Kings written by Linnea Tanner. It is a historical fantasy that I think would be loved by teenagers and adults alike. What would you do if you had to decide between the love of your life and protecting your family? That is what Catrin has to decide even as she is learning to control her abilities to merge her mind with her raven. She is ordered to be their guest’s/prisoner’s constant companion and to try to seduce information from him. Things are not always what they seem and it becomes hard to tell who can be trusted and who should be feared.
I think this book did a great job in showing how the political climate of the times could be treacherous and make promises get broken. Marriages are brokered to try to make a stronger alliance. The author did a great job in making it easy to visualize the events as they happened in the book. There are twists in the story that will have the reader on the edge of their seat with anticipation on how it will all turn out.
While the main characters of the book are Catrin and Marcellus, the secondary characters play a huge roll in keeping the story together. I am hoping to see these secondary characters as main characters in future books. I was impressed with the author’s ability to include so many characters without getting them mixed up. The descriptions of these characters were so spot on, that you automatically saw them in your mind as soon as their names were mentioned.
What I liked most about this book is that it is a mix of history and fantasy. The author took the time to research that time period and the events that were happening, but also let her imagination run wild and have fun with it. It was a great break away from the everyday, normal things. The only thing I really disliked about the book was that I came to the end of it. The storyline was great!
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars because I found it hard to stop reading this book. I was very impressed with the editing of this book as I did not see any errors while I was reading. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great fantasy with a dash of history thrown in. It was the best of both worlds in my opinion.
