Official Review: XI: A Collection of Poetry on Being Human
XI: A Collection of Poetry on Being Human is a book of poetry written by Andrew Joseph Zaragoza Jr. The poems in this book are a collection of the author's past. He writes about what he's been through and expresses his views on the human spirit. His poetry is meant to inspire his readers and make them think.
XI: A Collection of Poetry on Being Human contains a wide variety of topics. The authors writes about growing up, best friends, and relationships, as well as many other interesting themes. He keeps an upbeat attitude in most of the poems. The author's poems are inspirational and motivating. The reader can really feel the words the author uses. The collection contains just over a hundred poems. At the end of the book, the author includes a critical thinking section. This allows for the reader to look deeper into the poems and provide the opportunity to create further discussion on them.
Poetry lovers will enjoy reading this book. The poems cover a variety of topics. There would be something of interest for anyone into poetry. I believe the poems would be fitting for young adults. I feel they would really relate to them. Those who enjoy books that are inspirational will also like this book. The book isn't geared towards younger readers, such as elementary and junior high ages, so these youth would probably want to skip reading this one.
I enjoyed how the author used his own experiences to write this book. I felt I could really relate to many of the poems. I particularly liked the poem called, "Disillusioned." While the poem is short, so much is said in the six lines. I have sat in a room full of people and felt there was no way they could be human with how cruel they were. The author has an interesting way of wording things to make the reader really think about what is written. He does a good job of connecting with his readers. I found the titles to each section to be fitting. I also liked the critical thinking section the author included at the end of the book. I think this section would be good for those reading the book in a book club or for those reading the poems out loud in a group. It allows for a more in depth conversation.
I rated this book 4 out of 4 stars. It appears to be professionally edited. The book contains no errors or grammatical issues. The book is well-organized and flows well. The author uses his past to inspire his readers. His words and poetry are very moving. The critical thinking section was a nice added bonus to the book. I would actually like to reread the book and apply the critical thinking questions as I do. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed XI: A Collection of Poetry on Being Human. I would read future books by this author.
