Although I’m not a poetry buff, I do like the idea of a series of poems told sequentially in a way that tells a story. I may give this one a look. Thanks for the review, Marisa. :techie-studyingbrown:

I am not actually a fan of poetry, but from the book's title and cover page, I will give it a try. The themes in the book are amazing.

You review is excellently written! I downloaded this book today and found it very hard to put down. Chapin's writing style is beautiful and raw, with just enough abstraction to keep a reader interested. It sounds like she has been through a lot in her life; poetry is a great way to process and express these difficult experiences and emotions. I am excited to read more. Thanks for the recommendation!

Narrative poetry at its finest. I love the themes discussed in this book. We as a society need to talk more about these topics so we can be able to help one another. Thank you for the apt review. I enjoyed reading it.

The fact that it is made up of poems makes me think this book probably isn't for me. However, you made it sound like a really interesting read. Thanks for the review!

Lois' elegant choice of words and atypical writing style adds a layer of allure so charming, it will convert even the most reluctant poetry reader. Her expertise is proven by her ability to convey emotion with few words.

As a writer of poetry myself, I realise that it takes great courage to publish your own collection in a book. This is because poetry lays bare a gaping hole to your soul and your private thoughts. Many people do not appreciate this, but poetry is also therapeutic for the writer as well as the reader. This book sounds almost like a memoir written using poetry, and I am looking forward to reading it. Perhaps the style and the theme will be some inspiration for me as well.
Your review was interesting and compelling reading.

I agree that this may be considered a new genre. It is a long time since I studied or even read poetry, but what I read in this book does not seem to fall in the poetry category. It is just the fact that whatever is said is done so in few words and there is a lot of emotion in it that would qualify it as belonging to the lyric genre.
It does not mean it is not good or worth reading and you clearly identified and justified the strong points. Your fine analysis also identified the somewhat out of tune voice at a certain moment, even found an explanation for the weaker part.
A great review, thank you!

The poems seem to be short and succinct, yet thought-provoking. Dealing with the harsh realities of life, one can feel the extent of how much the narrator has been through. Being told in the manner of a story will make it an interesting read! Thanks for the review.
The book to read is not the one that thinks for you, but the one which makes you think.

I have such a difficult time reading poetry. This one sounds a bit out of the run of the mill type, taking on abuse and a timeline of the author’s life. The sample pages didn’t really thrill me, so I think I will pass, but thank you for more insight on this one.

Thanks for an excellent review. I probably would have taken a pass on this book, but I'm putting it on my to-read shelf for a rainy day. The way the author uses poetry to tell her lifestory is intriguing although it seems that she endured many hardships and sadness in her life. Congrats on BOTD

This is an excellent review. I love how you presented it. I might give it a chance. I love first person narrative especially in poetry.
