Official Review: Teenagers And Other Poems
Teenagers: And Other Poems is a collection of modern poetry by Melissa Marsden. As suggested by the title, several of the thirty-two poems featured in this book revolve around typical issues that parents of teenage boys have to deal with; sicknesses are faked to stay home from school and play games, the bedrooms contain smells that no human should be subjected to, and the toilet can't even be mentioned. As a whole, the poems in this collection are humorous in nature, with titles such as “Help – My Son is Driving” and “Man Flu.” A few serious topics are thrown in here and there, such as dealing with getting older and the death of a beloved pet.
I can easily say that this is poetry unlike the typical poetry we are conditioned to expect. To put it mildly, this was my kind of poetry. There is no frilly language or frivolous use of words for the sake of creating unnecessary imagery. It's direct and to the point, while still pulling together and conveying powerful emotions like poems are apt to do. Moms of teenage boys would like it best, but even those of us getting ahead in our years or dealing some unpleasant exes can enjoy it as well.
My favorite poem of the book was one titled “Bury Me.” It has a beautiful message about the ending of life but with a rather hilarious finish that I wasn't expecting at all. Another fun one is called “Four-Letter Word” about a terrible word in our language that we all hate. I was thinking about printing this one out in nice calligraphy and hanging it up at WORK for all of my office to enjoy.
Personally, I do a lot of reading; I'm currently averaging about 100 books per year. I absolutely love humorous books, yet they are so hard to come by these days. Humor tends to get lumped into the “romantic comedy” sub-genre, and I prefer to avoid romance. Do you know how hard it is to find a funny, non-romance book that isn't a basic book of jokes or anecdotes from a professional comedian? Trust me, it's pretty hard. So coming across a modern book that was funny was like finding a treasure at the bottom of a murky lake! It was just what I needed!
Being able to find the humor in real world situations is a strategy that so many readers could benefit from having around. With so much negativity in the news and on social media, we regularly need these pick-me-ups to bring smiles to our faces. Because of the excellent way that this author was able to combine beautiful poetry with hilarious real-life moments, I gladly give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
