[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Poemas" by Jacob Severn.]
Whenever you feel lonely, empty, and confused or joyful, excited, and loved, poetry becomes your best friend. A poem can express feelings, emotions, and ideas that no other art can do. Poemas by Jacob Severn is a collection of poems, photographs, and drawings that together express different feelings.
This book contains 36 poems. Though they express independent ideas, most of them share similar themes. Although most of the poems are free verses, there are some with sound patterns such as rhyme, rhythm, and alliteration. Besides the poems, there are several pictures that accompany each poem. Most of the time, the objects on these pictures represent the principal theme of the corresponding poem.
There are several challenges in life. Jacob does an outstanding job of expressing the effects of the challenges we encounter as we strive to live and meet our daily needs. It is for this reason that most of the poems in this book talk about these struggles. In this category, I liked a poem titled, “Sea of life.” It summarizes all the life’s struggles. The poet, through this book, educates the audience on the importance of peace. He criticizes those who are quick at going into war with each other, without thinking of the adverse effects it has on the vulnerable in society. He shows how sweet it is to live in peace. There are also poems on love and romance, relationship, and breakups, among others.
I liked so many things in this book. To begin with, the pictures that accompanied the poems blended with them so perfectly. For instance, very clear and high-quality photographs of exquisite sceneries accompanied the poems about nature. This made me to not only hear the poet’s voice but also feel his words. I enjoyed every poem in this book. Since each poem expressed independent ideas, it can be read in any order. For this reason, I found it more enjoyable to regroup them into different categories and read one category at a time. All the poems are well written and demand for self-reflection. This will help the readers to look deep into their lives and determine unique areas of adjustment. Since I didn’t find any grammatical errors, this book was exceptionally edited.
I recommend that the author categorizes the poems according to the lead themes they contain. This will make the reading more enjoyable since the readers will choose the category to read at a particular time, depending on their moods.
Since there isn’t anything I disliked, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to everyone who loves poetry. I don’t think there is any specific category of people who won’t enjoy it.
