Sometimes, insomnia comes as a blessing as it gives you time to reflect, in complete silence. And if you let your mind flow freely, numerous thoughts will cross your mind. Did you ever think about putting down on paper those vague ideas that cross your mind during moments of sleeplessness? And – even better – did you ever think about putting them down as poems? That’s exactly what Maggie Bloomfield did. But – bear in mind – insomnia comes both at night and during the day!

Sleepless Nights gathers 25 poems written by Maggie Bloomfield. They touch a vast array of topics and have different sizes, metrics, rhetoric, and editorial characteristics. This anthology is, therefore, very rich and attractive in many perspectives.

The topics vary from family bonds and romantic relationships to art and the seasons of the year. There seems to be a common element to all the poems: the author longs for fullness of life and craves for its meaning. Thus, readers are presented with soul sighs that are not bound by specific rules but take on different structures, with metrics and forms ranging from text that resembles prose to poetry with words and letters scattered throughout the page.

Although the book can be read in less than 30 minutes, a full reading experience can only be achieved if readers take their time to read and think about the meaning of the words. Perhaps a poem a day would be the best solution to be able to savor and capture the essence of Maggie Bloomfield’s messages.

The book is professionally edited. I could not find any non-borderline typos or grammar mistakes. The broad range of vocabulary diversity blended with engaging rhetoric delivers a text with outstanding linguistic quality. Readers can enjoy plain phrases as well as elaborate stylistic devices. There is only one instance of profanity. There are some mild erotic elements as two poems are erotic in nature (without graphic details).

As for my favorite element, I would point out the richness contained in such a short text. There are some life lessons to be taken from this book. As for what I disliked the most, I felt that the book should be much longer. In other words, I wanted more!

In conclusion, Sleepless Nights, by Maggie Bloomfield, is a breath of fresh air of humanity. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars without any hesitation, as the content is profound and editing is spotless. This book seems to be more appealing to fans of poetry and restless minds.

Recording thoughts on paper during a time of total silence usually births something powerful and worth sharing. Your description of the book makes me want to delve into it. Thank you for an excellent review.

For someone like me that suffers insomnia I think I should have a glimpse of the book.

Maybe you "should have a glimpse of the book" AND write your own "insomnian" thoughts as well.
Thank you for your comment.
