[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Heartfelt Expressions" by Jenny Cannon.]
Heartfelt Expressions is a poetry book composed of five parts with different themes that vary widely from life lessons to homages. The author brings her opinion and some of her experiences about the topics of relationships, mental health, happiness, and sadness in impressive poems.
In the first part, Jenny Cannon brings the theme of love and friendship in the shape of rhythmic verses with many rhyme patterns, such as crossed rhyme. The author shows how it feels to be in love with somebody and to have reliable companions, but she also tells the pain of unrequited loved. Then, in the second one, there are questions of heartbreak, disloyalty, dishonesty, domestic abuse, fear, and the paradoxes of life. In the third part, the theme is depression and mental illness, when the author shows her thoughts about suicide, despair, feeling forgotten, and faking happiness. In the fourth part, the author brings random poems about the seasons, the weather, and some events in her life. Lastly, the fifth part brings homage poems to her friends and family.
My favorite part of this poetry writing was the introspective and thoughtful discussion in the verses accompanied by the writer’s thoughts and perspectives. These aspects helped in the construction of a more profound, moving, and appealing book since the author talks about some relatable events and feelings in her life with a unique view. For example, Cannon brings the most difficult aspects of fighting depression, and one of them is the complicated feeling of absence, “a blackened void/ inside my chest.” Consequently, readers can relate to some verses on a personal level or being capable of identifying similar situations in their own lives.
There was nothing to dislike in this work. It seems professionally edited, and I found only a few minor issues that didn’t influence my reading. Besides, since it’s a poetry book, there are various grammatical adaptations the author made in order to suit the rhymes or the rhythm of the verses. This feature helped in the development of a mesmerizing melody and an impressive structure.
Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It’s a fascinating and well-written set of heartfelt poems with an engaging rhythm and relatable stories. I recommend this book to enthusiasts of romantic or dramatic poetry since the themes of love and relationships, in general, are constant in this volume. However, I don’t recommend it to readers who are affected by mental illness, such as depression, since they might get triggered by the poems.
