Official Review: Teenagers And Other Poems
Teenagers and Other Poems is a collection of short poems about the author's life and experiences living with teenage boys. Mellissa Marsden brings you into her life with poems about life in general, relationships, and places she has been. You hear about the way husbands act when they are sick, the way a teenage boy's room smells, and how we struggle with technology. There is also one poem that is written from the teenager's point of view about what happens when the Wi-Fi goes out.
This is a 50-page book that is short but sweet, filled with fun poems. Some of them are hilarious, and others start in such a way that you think that it will end serious, but Marsden concludes it with a funny twist. This book contains poems that are more serious which gives the feeling that it must have been difficult to write about. But it is not so dark and heavy that it will bring your mood down.
What I liked about Teenagers and Other Poems is that the poems aren’t hard to understand. There are no hidden meanings or far-fetched metaphors. But it is not so simple that it feels like nursery rhymes. I loved the poem My Dog. It was sweet and sentimental. Each one of the poems has a different theme, so everyone will be able to relate to at least one of them. I liked how the author complained in the poems about her sons in a playful manner that all mothers can relate to.
I rate Teenagers and Other Poems 4 out 4 stars. I didn't see any errors; the book seems professionally edited. There was not one thing I did not like about this book. It was entertaining and easy to follow and understand. Melissa Marsden thought of, and conveyed through her poems, everything that seems like irritations at the time they occur, but are, in fact, the things that you will miss when the children move out of the house or when your spouse is no longer with you. It makes you appreciate what you have and teaches you not to take life so seriously.
I would recommend Teenagers and Other Poems to both parents and teenagers. Profanity was only used three times in this book, and no erotic material, so this poem is family-friendly. I think it would be interesting for teenagers to read this book to see how adults view them sometimes. This might just become your new favorite book to read aloud around the dinner table as you laugh together about how accurate the poems are.
