Official Review: Tripwire in the heart by Barbara ND-Hinton
Tripwire in the Heart by Barbara Daniels-Hinton is a book that instructs readers on Christian spirituality. As Christians, we confront many challenges in our lives. We may be saved by Christ, but that doesn’t make us free of sin and temptation. How many of us are “leaky Christians”? Otherwise known as Christians who believe the Word of God, but live a life consumed by the needs of the flesh. Do you give with a cheerful heart the way God instructs? This book will help you see the scriptures anew with a greater clarity and understanding of the Lord’s teachings.
I have really enjoyed reading this book by this lovely lady of God. Her words are calming and full of divine revelation and insight for new Christians, but also helpful for refreshing the minds of seasoned believers. I was going through a very trying time while attempting to read this book, but as soon as I started a chapter, my stress just melted away. It felt like I had a friend there speaking to me and telling me everything would be okay. I have been a Christian for several years now and I just loved getting her perspective on subjects I have studied for some time. One of my favorite chapters was about the “leaky Christian”. I just love that term and find it so fitting. I had a conversation with a Christian during this time and when I read that chapter, I said, “yep, that fits his description perfectly.” It was so helpful to see this form of Christianity defined, so that I could pray for him.
As far as editing, the book looks professional, but she writes exactly the way she speaks. I didn’t have a problem understanding anything she was saying, but she doesn’t use standard English grammar to communicate. For some readers, particularly African Americans, this could actually be a benefit to their understanding of the text. The only reason I mention it is so readers understand what to expect and also to alert the author in case she wants to revise the book in the future. Personally, I liked the book as it was, but some may disagree and consider the language rife with error.
Where there is zero error, is in her teaching of the scriptures. She is biblically sound in every aspect. She doesn’t often speak of personal experiences, but she did share one story about her conversion. She described an amazing miracle that happened to her when she was out drinking. I won’t spoil it, but it was so incredible to hear this testimony because I’ve never heard of anything like this happening to anyone I’ve met. It’s just reaffirming to know that God still performs wonders for those special enough to see them.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I would give the content 4 stars; the deduction is only for the editing because I’m required to deduct points for grammar errors, sadly. I really enjoyed the book and found it spiritually uplifting and comforting. I personally liked that she talked to me as herself, so it’s up to her if she wants to change it or not. I think new Christians will enjoy the ease with which she explains our faith, but anyone in need of a boost of faith will appreciate the lessons she reiterates in this book.
