Growth by Devon Gillespie is a collection of poetry in which the author expresses his opinions on various topics. He comments on human nature, human character, fame, state, government, church, money, music, sex, and more. In some poems, he also writes about his emotions and the way he looks at the world. Most of the poems are allegorical, and each is named after the central motif of the poem itself.

Honestly, there is not much that I liked about this collection of poems. If I had to point out something, it would be a skillfully composed rhyme in the verses, which makes the poems quite melodic. Also, I liked the author’s commentary on the music and the way he identifies it with a weapon in difficult situations. I also like how he describes and comments on growth and progress.

Unfortunately, this book has more negative aspects than positive ones, and I didn’t really enjoy reading it. The first thing I don’t like is the fact that some poems have punctuation marks and others don’t. In addition, the poems are very confusing and vague. In most poems, I felt as if the author was writing what came to his mind first, not caring if it made any sense. Also, I don’t like that too many topics intertwine in the book. It would have been better if the author had selected a narrower range of topics and argued them in more detail. At one point, he talks about emotions and music, and on another page, he comments on the government and the church. Also, the book ends abruptly and has no concluding words by the author.

All things considered, I decided to rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. Reading this collection of poems was a somewhat confusing experience. Sadly, the book did not make much sense to me, and I mostly did not understand what the author was trying to say. The main reason I did not give this book 1 star is the fact that I liked some of the author’s reflections, especially on music, growth, and progress.

I would recommend this collection of poems primarily to lovers of allegorical poetry. I think that this collection would also appeal to those who like books in which the authors use the technique of the stream of consciousness. I would say that this is one of those books that every reader will experience and perceive differently.

A poetry book about nature, fame, family, government, sex sound very interesting. Though I am not a fan of poetry, I would like to read some sections of the book.

Nice, I am particularly interested to read the author's opinion on these oftentimes, controversial areas. Thank you for the review.
