The Backwater Sermons by Jay Hulme

Post by Gravy »

I previously read Jay Hulme's Clouds Cannot Cover Us and loved it.
There were parts of this one that didn't appeal to me as much, but others had me sobbing. It's a wonderful collection, and I happily rate it 4 out of 4.

This is, obviously, a bit more focused on religion, so not for those who avoid that.

Favorites are numerous and varied, such as 'For A Short While,' 'Metaphors,' 'Jesus at the Gay Bar,' 'The Carpenter,' and 'Take These Words.'

But my favorite is one of what he calls his 'plague poems':

What is grief, if not love persevering?

Grief is just love with no place to go.
