[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Cicada Song" by Ryan Norman.]
Cicada Song by Ryan Norman is a collection of drama and poetry. The author uses nature themes throughout his poetry and drama pieces to express his emotions and vulnerability. For example, descriptions of water and mountains are frequent. At the core of most of these pieces are love and acceptance. Sometimes the love and affection are returned, in other pieces they are not. In several pieces, the author is searching for a physical or emotional connection.
This book consists of forty pages of poetry and dramatic expressions. It can easily be read in one sitting. It begins with the dramatic poetry of “Labyrinth,” which includes vivid descriptions of the violent waves of the ocean. The book ends with the poem “New Year,” which expresses hope for the coming year. In between these two poems, there are several heartfelt expressions of emotions and struggles. The author captures emotions brilliantly and conveys those emotions to the reader in a very relatable way.
I read this book in one sitting, and I appreciated the vulnerability that the author presented in its pages. That was what I liked most about the book. The author was able to express emotions very well. I also enjoyed the descriptions of nature that were included in most of the pieces. Readers can easily visualize the settings of each piece due to Mr. Norman’s expert descriptions. As a result, it was effortless for me to visualize the location. There was nothing I disliked about this book.
The poem I enjoyed reading the most was “Summer Snow.” The descriptions of crunching through the summer snow and blowing on a dandelion create a vivid image. I especially liked the description of dandelion seeds floating in the wind like snowflakes. It also had a twist at the end that was unexpected. In addition, I thoroughly enjoyed the recklessness of “Rust.” The descriptions of the racing car and the tear-filled eyes create a vivid experience for readers. I appreciated the stories and emotions that these pieces conveyed.
I didn’t see any errors in the book, so I believe it was professionally edited. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy poetry focused on love, nature, and acceptance. For the reasons stated, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The author is a gifted writer who conveys deep emotions and vulnerability very well. For that reason, I wouldn’t give it any less than a perfect score. I think readers will be able to relate to the locations and emotions contained in this book.
