It has been said that poetry can surprise the reader with an ah-ha! experience and give revelation, insight, and further understanding of elemental truth and beauty; I have begun to understand this. This is my first time reading a poetry book, and surprisingly, I found it quite entertaining. Secret Garden and other Poems is a collection of amazing short poems written by Nitin Kakarla. The book comprises 33 poems, each telling either tales of joy, art, hope, beauty, love, or sorrow.

It began with a poem titled Secret Garden, where a young boy, who has been bedridden for so long, was healed simply because he had faith. My favorite poem was The Diary of a Young Roach, which I found quite funny. It is about a young roach on the verge of death venting out in his letter about the cruelty man has shown him. There are a lot more enjoyable poems in this book, each telling different experiences and evoking a series of emotions.

The author did not just pick the right words, but she also used correct rhythm and followed a particular rhyming scheme, which made this book a more appealing read. Most poems had a lesson or two to teach. Thankfully, the poems were short, so I found them easy to read and understand. I haven’t read a lot of poems, but I feel the author wrote this book uniquely. The author was able to tell interesting stories using poems. Each poem’s title was very befitting, as it gave clues to the content of the poem. Some poems evoked emotions and ideas that I couldn’t precisely pin down.

I appreciate that the author added a picture after each poem, but the pictures were not clear and concrete. They didn’t describe enough about the poem and only made this book seem more like a children’s book. Iskandar was the only poem I didn’t like, as I found it hard to understand the message the author was trying to pass across. The writing style the author used there was a bit obscure, unlike the other poems.

I am glad to state that I noticed just one use of profane language, so this book will be a comfortable read for all, especially for people who love good poetry. The writing style Kakarla used was easy to understand, and the book received exceptional editing. I gladly rate Secret Garden and other Poems 3 out of 4 stars. I deducted one star because of the reasons stated above. Overall, this is a very entertaining poetry book.

I don’t read a lot of poetry but I’m always so awed whenever I do. This sounds like a collection of beautifully written poems. I like that there are pictures to help with visual stimulation. This was also a great review, well done!
