The pandemic of 2020 marks a bleak period in history. The entire world struggles with a global health issue. In the United States, the election happens to fall in the same year, consequently adding more tension to the health concerns. Everyone tries to cope with the daily challenges and struggles. In the case of Dr. Schneider, she discovers creative writing to get through these difficult times. She shares her musings to spread inspiration and motivation.

A Brighter Tomorrow is a coffee table book that looks back into the pandemic year of 2020. The collection is the creative collaboration of two talented medical doctors, Lori Schneider, MD., for the poetry and Mark Salevitz, MD., for the original artworks. Color-coded chapters divide the book into themes, each with an appropriate epigraph. The poems have corresponding illustrations. The location of the text and graphics is consistent within the entire book, which presents a neat and organized layout. This consistency contributes to a steady reading flow. The attention to the composition and format is what I liked best in the book.

The poems are insights and reflections about the pandemic and other relatable and timely subjects. Some of these topics include courage, hope, injustice, and love. The poems present the difficulties in life, but they end with an encouraging note. The verses rhyme, but there are not many literary devices. The words are direct, and the storytelling is straightforward. The poetry style fits into the objective of the book. It provides an expression to find comfort. Also, because the words are simple, it is not subjected to complex interpretations. In effect, the simplicity broadens the target audience.

A mix of photographs and original artworks illustrates the poetry. Several font styles and color-coded chapters help identify the parts of the book. The visual elements give an overall lightness and vibrancy to the collection. The organized layout unites the variety in the visuals.

Likewise, it is notable to mention another inspiring aspect of the book. It encourages people to discover their creative side. Creativity helps in channeling strong emotions into productive pursuits. Additionally, creative talent transcends job descriptions.

There is nothing I disliked in this book. However, I have some suggestions. Exploring other literary devices or figurative language might help introduce another layer to the narrative of the poems. For the illustrations, a single medium could add to the visual cohesiveness of the layout. In this case, I favor the artwork over the photos. But these suggestions are a matter of preference. They do not affect the book in achieving its objectives.

The editing is neat. The errors are minor and almost negligible. There are no foul language, sex scenes, and offensive material for any religious group. It is appropriate for an audience of sixteen years old and above. It is a suitable introductory book for an audience who wants to start exploring creative writing. The simplicity of the writing style and the inspiring themes will encourage those new to poetry. However, those who prefer more complex literary devices or figurative language might want to look elsewhere. This book is well-suited in areas for entertaining guests, like lounges or waiting areas. The relatable topics are ideal conversation-starters, while the visuals are engaging.

The book intends to inspire and motivate. It effectively uses the contents and the visuals to accomplish its goal. The themes are timely and relatable, which can influence a broad audience. It did not shy away from exploring colors, font styles, and images to deliver an impactful presentation. For achieving its objectives and the neat editing, the book deserves a full mark. I give it four out of four stars.
