Has song writing over-shadowed poetry writing?

It depends on the audience and compared to the populace, songwriting has overshadowed poetry and the reason for that is simple: poetry is more of a literary work and songwriting is not. So most people don't have the intellectual apathy it takes to enjoy poetry, unlike song writing that even if you don't get the lyrics, the rhythm can easily be enjoyed.
