180 Degrees by Deftly Speaking is a collection of poetry that speaks about humans, true feelings, and nature. A number of the poems were about humans and human nature but there were also some poems about other things that threw off the mood of the entire book.
The first thing I noticed was the subject of a couple of the poems near the beginning of the book. The author tried to compare some things but it ended up being a confusing three-way comparison that didn't make much sense. Another issue I found was the use of crude words being used to describe something so beautiful and magical. The entire poem was spoilt by some words that the author could and should have left out.
The first quarter of the book starts out very impersonally but the author starts to get very deep and sentimental after a while. The best pieces in the book were the ones written about a specific subject the author seems to understand very well. In certain poems the author inappropriately compares two things that really shouldn't be put together. The author left a lot of unfinished thoughts and had me guessing where it ended which made me wonder what the author was thinking and what the poem was about.
There was a big overuse of punctuation and the lack of capitalization had me gritting my teeth. There were words used that neither I nor the dictionary has ever heard of which confused me because I didn't know what the author was talking about. A good chunk of the book has poems that I really don't think belong in there. I prefer poetry books to have a certain theme but this one was all over the place and I wasn't able to connect with it. The author is very expressive and does a good job of conveying her feelings.
The book was interesting and fun but it failed to make me feel want it wanted to make me feel. I give the book a 2 out of 4 rating because although it was pretty well-written, it didn't have any real impact on me like other poetry does. I think the author should pick a theme for the book and stick to it. It's confusing when there are several themes and several different moods. I think this book is really for anybody. They can be read to children or adults.
