Shadows by William Stephen Edwards is a wonderful poetry book. It covers many themes and goes in-depth with each one. One of the major themes is life and death. Several poems cover the beauty and pain of life and the sadness of death. The other major theme is war. Most of the poems cover life and war and the aftermath, including how it changes people. Different wars are referenced throughout the poems. Other themes are seasons, abuse, and love. Several variations of love are included in the poems, ranging from platonic to romantic. Loss is also a huge theme in the poems that many people will experience in their lives. There is also an aspect of psychology in this book, due to the poems showing the way people think and react to life experiences, such as war and losing loved ones.

This book was edited amazingly. There are several things to like about this poem. The poems have excellent descriptions and imagery. The literary devices used in the poems also add a nice element to the book. Edwards uses metaphors and comparisons to make the poems come to life. By comparing one thing to another, Edwards helps the reader to further understand the poem. The inclusion of dialect in some of the poems adds character and helps to develop the poems. The reader can get a sense of personality from the dialect. The different poem types along with the formatting help to tell the stories in different unique ways. Every format that was used suited the poem.

There was nothing that I disliked about this book. The poems held many emotions and were written beautifully. Additionally, The poems were very meaningful. Every poem flows well. The poems are as also different lengths. They are as long or as short as they need to be.

This book was a 5 out of 5. The poems covered several topics while still staying connected through one story. This book is a great read for several different people and can be enjoyed by several age groups.

I would recommend this book to people who were in a war or were affected by war. This book speaks heavily about war and the outcome of wars. It also shows how war affects people's lives and can change their whole world. People who are interested in wars and how people experienced war as a soldier can also enjoy this book.
