Romance and love are long-established poetic themes. Timeless and common to many people, such themes pull deeply at emotion and bring forward the best or worst of those who experience them. For centuries or maybe even for millennia, writers have shared their experiences and longings through this most beautiful form of the written word. In his book Romance With a Touch of Love, Kevin Hollingsworth adds his voice to the many that have spoken before about love.

Romance With a Touch of Love is a collection of twelve short poems. Though brief, each one very effectively expresses emotions such as longing, admiration, desperation, fulfillment, and others. Mr. Hollingworth’s poetic voice is sincere and passionate. The reader might easily believe that the poems in this collection are informed by Mr. Hollingsworth’s own experiences because the emotions displayed feel so very real.

There is one particular theme that is common to many of the poems in this collection and makes the collection stand out among others of its genre. This is the celebration of inner beauty. The world around us often insists that physical beauty is of utmost importance - if not absolute necessity - when it comes to finding romance. Naturally, physical beauty or attractiveness has a place in romantic poetry, but what I appreciate so much about Mr. Hollingsworth’s collection is that it comes secondary to the beauty of the soul. As I read through Mr. Hollingsworth’s poetry, it was very apparent to me that he valued and searched for inner beauty first and foremost. Such a theme makes the poetry not only more enjoyable to read but also more enriching to the reader’s life.

Poetry is one of my favorite forms of the written word, and poetry done well is an especially enjoyable treat. Mr. Hollingsworth’s poetry is indeed truly well done. In the interest of not spoiling anyone else’s enjoyment, I will refrain from specific examples here, but Mr. Hollingsworth employs at times exquisite turns of phrase, powerful imagery, charming plays on words, and soul-wrenching symbols. These poems appear to be the work of a writer with a real gift for words and phrases: a true poet.

By now it should be obvious that Romance With a Touch of Love will earn 4 out of 4 stars from me. I found the poems well executed, the collection soundly put together, the themes both admirable and nearly universal, and the experience of reading enjoyable overall. Even if you are not usually the type to enjoy poetry, I encourage anyone and everyone to give this collection a try. It’s short but rich and sweet: a small investment with great reward.
