[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Poetic Manifestation" by Robert J Nugent.]
Constantly, from my experience, language appeal comes as a result of the deepest and most emotional expression, which I tend to find in poetry books. Poetic Manifestation by Robert J. Nugent is one such book that proves this statement right with the amount of effort and beauty put into it.
Poetic Manifestation by Robert J. Nugent is a collection of poems by the same author that are written in different styles. The poems in this book are all a result of the author's experiences and occurrences in everyday life. There are many topics tackled, including love, mental health, betrayal, religion, and many others. In the beginning, he has a short explanation where he defines poetry and even acknowledges some famous poets, like Robert Frost, who inspired his poetry writing. This was an indication that I had some masterpieces coming my way. I was not disappointed, and I went through phases of learning, love, nostalgia, and many other emotions.
The beauty of poetry is sharing emotions with the writer and even seeing everyday actions in a different light. Robert J. Nugent has transformed different phases and activities of daily life into shared emotions with whoever gets to read his poems. This ranges from birthdays to walking in the park and other activities, including baptism. He uses simple words that are easy to comprehend and lovable phrases but is still able to leave an impact by whatever emotion is portrayed to the reader.
I love how all the poems in this book discuss different topics like racism, independence, and even patriotism, like the poem that talks about the American flag. However, the theme that I most resonate with is how he advocated for mental health. Under this, he also talked about self-acceptance. This will relate to many in the same way it did to me. Through his words, I understood what it feels like to not love yourself for who you are or how to believe in yourself when doubting your capabilities. It is similar to someone describing something you never knew could be put into words or properly explained.
Reading Poetic Manifestation by Robert J. Nugent is like going through every step of life with him. The world he portrays is "simple but enjoyable" as he describes it in the poem Lost in Life. He looks at even the small details, like the seasons and the people, that evoke happiness, peace, and longing. The poem I loved most was the dedication to his close friend. I was not only touched by the act of dedicating the poem to a person he treasured, but it was the poem with the best show of emotion and style.
The only negative in the book was that sometimes the title of the next poem came at the very end of a page while the poem began on a new page. It would be much more accessible to have the title of the poem and the poem on the same page. I would also recommend grouping the poems according to the theme. It was not very pleasant to read a poem more inclined to the religious side and another on heartbreak and longing on the next page. Grouping would give meaning to some poems in the book.
It is as a result of all the discussed aspects that I give Poetic Manifestation by Robert J. Nugent 4 out of 5 stars. When it comes to poetry, presentation is as important as the style and emotions in the poems, and due to the problems I encountered with the presentation, I only deducted one star. However, the book is satisfying for anyone who loves poetry. Additionally, I did not notice any grammatical errors, taking into consideration the author's freedom in poetry writing, and I commend the exceptional work done.
I recommend this book to all those who would love to be poets. This is, without a doubt, an inspiration. Furthermore, the style used in writing this poem makes it suitable for readers who admire free-style writing. My experience with these poems makes me believe that anyone who's been exposed to poetry for the first time would love this collection. There are some quotes from the Bible and poems that are religious, but I don't think they will deter any reader.
