It’s 3 a.m. by Ruth Fenton is a compilation of poems and essays that evoke some of the author’s life memories and thoughts to give the reader a lovely and enjoyable time. This book might contain some of the best and most honest poems and essays ever written, and even though the author describes them as “nonsense” I can guarantee that every reader will disagree with the author and describe them as “impeccable”.

Reading the book It’s 3 a.m., was amazing. The author’s writing style is incredible; it felt like talking with my own mother or reading about my family. It was so familiar that I felt like I had been friends with Ruth Fenton my whole life. There is nothing negative I could say about this book; maybe it was too short, and I wanted to keep reading. Ruth Fenton has an amazing sense of humor, making even the acknowledgments something I loved reading (and I often skip them as they are not meant for me). One of the things I appreciated the most was that one of the poems (September 1954–April 1975) talks about SEATO and includes a note to explain what SEATO was. I love it when authors don’t simply assume every reader knows everything they are talking about or help the reader understand the real meaning of what they are writing about.

Talking about motherhood and resume gaps, moving constantly, marriage, and an addiction to coffee, among other topics, It’s 3 a.m. is an incredible book and one that is easy to relate to. I am sure it will make every reader feel like the author shares a common memory. One of my favorite poems was “Just Go”, I could identify with the verses more than I could have imagined an author could make me feel. Something similar happened with “When Is Mommy Coming Back from Heaven?”, a poem that almost made me cry. I also loved “We’re Going to Iceland”. Reading this book was so much fun, and the writing style was amazing.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The editing is impeccable, as I could only find one minor error. As I said, there aren’t any negative things about this book, and it absolutely deserves perfect writing.

Mothers will absolutely adore this book. I recommend this book to military wives, former military members, homemakers, and mothers. This book will appeal the most to a female audience, but anyone can read it as it is suitable for teenagers and adults, male and female.
