Review of The Life We Lead
The Life We Lead by Angel Anthony Cordero is a book of poetry with 99 poems divided into 14 sections. As the book’s title suggests, these poems are written to represent how we are affected by and respond to various aspects of our lives. These include love, nature, time, faith, society, work, family, and friends. I agree with the author’s belief that “there exists a poem for everybody and anybody” within this book. As for me, I enjoyed his poems on faith which appear in the category, “Pillars”, but the poem that really hit home and, in his words, left “my heart feeling dreadfully sore”, is the book’s very first poem which appears in the category, “The Ten Originals”. While I can relate to other poems in his book, I feel that Cordero wrote “Time Lost & Memories That Haunt” just for me.
Other than the few grammatical errors I found, the only negative thing that struck me was the omission of a Table of Contents. After reading the entire book, it would be a great improvement if I could easily go back and locate the poems I might want to read again.
Considering these negative aspects, I still rate this book four out of five stars. The book accomplishes what the author intended by allowing readers to experience their life journey through poetry. Like most other poetry books, some poems in this book require more thought than others but, in general, the poems in this book are easy to read and understand.
I recommend this book only to adult readers who are fond of reading poetry. The reason I do not recommend it to younger readers is not because of any profanity or lewdness, of which this book has none. Rather, it is because they will not fully appreciate some of the adult themes covered by these poems since they have not yet experienced some of the ups and downs that most adults have experienced.
