The Sound of the Broken Wand by author and songwriter Tiki Black is a collection of poetry, lyrics, and prose that centers on human emancipation. The poems are rich in imagery and language, with every word carrying profound emotional weight.

As I read, I felt like I was going on a journey. From the beginning, it captures the frustration and pain of a human being tied or trapped by many things. Debts can take many forms and have many names: love, gratitude, or power. It made me wonder if we are truly free. The author then takes us on a journey of self-discovery, revealing that the barriers to our liberation often come from within. Gradually, the poems encourage us to break the spell cast on our minds and embrace the magic in life.

Many metaphors made me contemplate. The mirror represents reflection and deflection—the struggle we face when exploring our inner worlds. Do we look into the mirror and accept our identities, or do we deny uncomfortable truths about ourselves? This book could be discussed in literature classes and workshops as it holds philosophical values, and its language use is great for analysis. I especially liked the imagery of the wand, which symbolizes the bewitchment that deludes our minds.

The essay "Reflections" stood out to me as well. The author shares wisdom on how our perspectives are shaped by the outside world—family, education, and society. These influences can undermine our self-worth, limit our thinking, control our expression, and hinder our growth. So how can we break free from them to see the endless possibilities in life? This piece is thought-provoking and helped me connect more deeply with the poems.

Some of the verses are song lyrics that come with musical scores. This led me to check out her music online, and listening to her songs added a whole new layer to my experience. The music is magnificent, and her voice is so powerful. "The Debt" and "Nobody Knows" have touched me to the core every time I played them.

There is nothing I do not like about the book. After such an emotionally profound reading experience, I am pleased to give this book five out of five stars. The editing is flawless, and the book’s design has a dreamy feel as if it invites readers into a reflective state of mind. The impact it left on me is enormous. This book would be a treasure for any deep thinker. I also suggest listening to her album for a complete, immersive experience.
