[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "How Did Things Get So Off Course" by Juanita Kuwik.]
How Did Things Get So Off Course by Juanita Kuwik is a collection of poems that fit under the subsections Politics, Love, Family, and Life. The poems are all short and rhyme. Some of the poems have pictures after them to add a visual to the words. In the politics subsection, the poems talk about the country being split into two, people wanting peace, but it all comes down to just one person’s choice for all, and many other topics. The life poems talk about finding something good in each day, things that frustrate people, and watching people who are outside. The love section has poems about loving and losing that love, children, parents, and people passing away. The family section is at the end of the book and covers being a daddy’s girl, the diversity within family trees, and having family not living near you.
I give this book a 4 out of 5 rating. Overall, the book is enjoyable, and the poems cover a wide range of topics. I feel people could find at least one poem to relate to. The poems are short, which makes them a quick read. They do not build on each other, so you can pick up the book to read in order or read a poem at random. Some of the pictures were pretty and felt like they fit the poems. However, some of them seemed juvenile and did not add to the poems. I also felt that the majority of the poems were nice; however, they did not leave me thinking about them after the fact. They were more surface-level and not very deep. There were a few editorial errors, and the titles had different variations of capitalization. There was no consistency with the capitalization in the titles, and it was a little frustrating at times.
I would recommend this book to someone who is looking for an easy, light set of poems. The poems are not too deep or complex, so if you are looking to just read something easy and fun, this is the book for you.
