The book, Bleeding Gull – look, feel, fly is a short poetry book that was written by Raed Anis Al-Jishi. I would rate this book a 4 out of 4. I am aware that a perfect rating is unlikely for most books, however, I believe that this book truly deserves it. There were no spelling or grammatical errors, and the poems were extremely well-written and moving.

This book is a collection of poems that explore a variety of different themes. There are poems about life and death, love, freedom, and more. Since there are so many themes in this book, it was easy for me to find poems that I could connect with and that related to me personally. Some of my favorite poems in this book are “Harmony,” “Wailer,” “Jailed but Free,” “Homeland Songs,” “My Right,” “Burgundy,” “Grieve,” and “Creation.” There was not a single poem in this book that I did not like, however, the few that I listed above just really stood out to me.

Each poem has such vivid imagery that give readers a sense a calm. When reading this book, I felt like I was sitting by a beach or floating through the wind, which is consistent with the idea that the poems are from the viewpoint of the gull. The diction in this collection of poems is phenomenal. There is such a variety of words that are not used commonly in everyday conversations that appear in these poems, which make them stand out from many other literary works. Even with these words that add so much to the flow and imagery of the pieces, it is still easy to follow along and comprehend the message that each one presents.

The poems in this book are all very short, but there is no shortage or emotion, imagery, or a message in any of them. Many times, I come across poems that sound nice and have a nice flow to them but are void in meaning. However, there are no such poems in this book. Each poem has such a strong message that is clearly delivered. It is amazing that a few short lines on a page can be so descriptive and moving, but the author is clearly very talented in that aspect.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this collection of poems to anyone. I feel that even people that do not read poetry often or necessarily like it, would enjoy these poems.
