A Ghost Held Me Whilst I Slept
Sweetest maiden in the land
Break your secrets to me so grand
Your banshee spirit stole my heart
Now from your world I can’t depart
In payment for your phantom joy
Whisper how your powers toy
How your hair spins silver moons
How your sigh makes flowers bloom
How your breath takes life from man
How your touch leaves fiery brands
What makes your eyes see through my mind?
How can you read my soul’s design?
Your ears, they hear before I sigh
They hear the words I’ve yet to cry
What are the secrets your locked lips hold?
What are the secrets your tongue’s not told?
Where in my mind did you behold
My darkest secret that chills me cold?
Keep silence, maiden, tell no soul
How I tried to woo your fair ghost, bold
Tell none my dreams of seeking you
For fear my dreaming may come true
Tell no man, no woman, nor babe
That at your feet my head once laid
Throughout the night while in a trance
I watched your figure swing and dance
Tell none that I’m bewitched by you
No ear can hear of the spell you threw
One look, one touch, you tempted me
A shackling power without a key
My emotions you’ve gathered
And spin around in my head
Through the night at your feet
I could have been dead
But when sky was lit with the streaks of dawn
You gently released me from your game of pawns
From a web of dreams I stumbled out
Remembering and knowing that without a doubt
A ghost had held me whilst I slept
Into my mind her cold hands had crept
Robbing me blind of my senses to wake
Before her spell over me did take
Walking from that broken grave
I looked back once, felt fear and crave
She was watching, tempting me to come back again
I confess it was hard to turn away even then
But my feet knew better
Than my heart and mind
And flew down the road
Left the temptress behind
Sleep not, my friend, by the grave of the dead
Lest they seize the thoughts in your head
And from the dream you may never waken
So let not my advice to you be forsaken
