The African Series: Football

We line up in groups oblivious to our differences.
The sun is scorching, and the wind too fast to breathe.
Every afternoon it's time to play,
the acacia trees are our natural makeshift goalposts.

Weaving our ball was a daunting task,
Juma, Nekesa, and Kungu fetched for the sisal strings.
Ireri, Nafula, and Omondi sourced plastic bags.
Stuffing, stuff in, wadding up an inch in, perfection
is on our to-do list.

We've not had lunch yet, but our time together keeps the pangs at bay.
Our waistlines are smaller, and our ribs evident.
It's time to kick and chase,
I put my pen down in a cloud of dust.
