My Daddy is a Soldier
My daddy is a soldier,
a good one from what I hear
But won't you let him take a break?
He's been gone almost a year.
I know you need him to fight your fights
But his children need him too.
His wife is crying every night
What more do you need him to do?
1 year later...
You missed my first recital
Never taught Mary to ride her bike
But it's okay; I know you're busy
Because they told me you had to fight.
I know you always think of us
When you hold your gun each day
Even though it should be your baby boy
Who was born on Father's Day.
2 years later...
Momma's gone and lost her job
But Danny's working after school.
I've got the house under control
I'm just doing what you told me to do.
Don't worry about us, Daddy dear,
I'm sure we'll be alright.
Just be safe wherever you are
Then you'll get to go home that night.
3 years later...
Your friend came by to visit us.
He looked nice in his Air Force blues,
But he didn't look too happy
When he told Mom the news.
He told us when your plane took off
something had gone all wrong,
But you went and saved everybody
That you were very strong.
15 years later...
Now I've got my own to raise
And my husband helps me when he can
But I'll need to learn to do this on my own
Because he's leaving for Iran.
My babies, they know Daddy has to go
And when he comes back, they'll be much older
But they smile and tell their friends at school,
"I'm proud my daddy is a soldier."

Your poem is a beautiful tribute to those to whom we owe so much. We often forget that each soldier or emergency worker has a family who needs them but despite this they put the safety and security of their country or community foremost as a result of their chosen professions. I think your choice of presenting the narration through the voice of a soldier's child was an exceptionally nice touch.
Thank you for sharing.

I'm very sorry. I MEANT you but my brain was on a coffee break when I began writing my previous post. I think it was the hypnotizing effect of rssllue's HaPpY faces doing their group hug that threw a few of my ever-dwindling brain cells over the top ropes.EstellaMarieRose wrote:Actually, DATo, it is my piece, but thank you for your kind words.
Beautiful poem Estella ! Please grace us with more of your work!
