The Youngest Shepherd - a Christmas Poem
and many miles away
a lonely plain filled with a glow
far brighter than the day,
A towering angel came to show
awe-struck shepherds the way,
In celestial light arrayed
he told them not to be afraid.
Good tidings of great joy he said,
were granted them that night,
instead of biding there, he said,
they should follow the light,
but sheep untended and unfed,
they knew could not be right,
And so the youngest shepherd boy
could not share in the light, the joy.
So on the lonely hillside bare
he was left behind
with only sheep for company there
pretended not to mind,
but still the poor lad longed to share
the glory they would find,
and wished that he could be with them
on their way to Bethlehem.
Suddenly he realised
that he was not alone,
once more there had materialised
a wondrous light that shone,
the youngest shepherd was surprised
to see there was just one ...
One little angel, radiant, bright
came into the youngster's sight.
The little angel said, 'I, too,
have not journeyed afar,
to see the things the others do
following that star,
I'm younger than they are, it's true,
and smaller than they are,
but I still feel quite forlorn
not to see the babe that's born.
All at once they saw above
a soft and lambent light
radiant with the promise of
a realm forever bright
a place filled with eternal love
and they knelt at the sight,
and heard the loveliest voice of all,
say 'Do not forget, I too am small!'
