Desktop Globe

I remember you, desktop globe
You were robust and fine sitting on my desk
Like a perfect, harmless ornament.
I’d spin you around, travel across the seas
Miles and miles I could go.
You sent me off exploring, on endless adventures
Passed the shining oceans and blue skies,
Across the lands, heavy with people.
People who eat and leave their crumbs
People who build tall and think big
People who work your land,
Now cracked up and dry
I’m sorry I didn’t know.
You are heating up -and fast.
Burning in the sun
Melting, like the Wicked Witch of Oz.
Miles are the land I fail to see
The sky is scarlet, the earth just brown.
In this dark heat, I remember you.
You must still be on my desk,
I wouldn’t know; everything is gone.
