False Smile- Original Poem by Theana

Post by Theana De lima Araujo »

false smile

Listen...
I've been wearing a false smile,
I've been acting happy,
and that has been a disservice to me.

I fake laughed,
false loved,
only my tears and my anger were real.
I was blocking out all my emotion.
how the hell did I expect to heal?

I had lost my heart,
Given it away to hurt,
I’d built a fort to be alone,
terrified of anything unknown.

My mom pulled me to safety
with her work metaphysically.
She helped me see the hatred,
the hardened little girl inside of me.

I had to learn empathy.
I had to live in reality.
I could no longer chase rainbows.
or live in my dreams eternally.

I’m smiling again.
I’m moving and making true friends.
I’m trying to embrace change,
welcome the new, the strange.

I realise it will take time.
I’ve been living as a mime,
over-exaggerated feelings trapped in a box,
holding my voice, silencing my words...
all because…. I once was hurt.
