Potholes

There is something beautiful about potholes
When it rains, there’s no telling how deep they will go
And when summer bakes all damp from them
The smallest breath send billows of life up to kiss the sky.

I think this is the first time I've read something about potholes that made me smile. Thank you!

Nice poem. Reminds me of Emily DIckenson's poems - short but packed.
One question: what is meant by "billows of life"? I see you are from New Zealand. Is there something there - a type of insect or bird - which uses holes in the earth such as potholes in which to shelter?
More poems please! [:- )

Hey DATo, thanks for asking

I live in Christchurch and I wrote this poem soon after the 2011 earthquake (which killed 185 people and left many people homeless) as you can imagine it did some damage to the roads and I biked to school through uncountable potholes. One of the best coping mechanisms that human have is humour and so there were many funny photos of people stuck in puddles they didn't realize were over their heads and many Facebook rants about the dirty cars from the airborne dust from dried up silt and rubble. I wrote this poem as an attempt to bring something light hearted and positive about a very bleak time.

I think the fact that you consider things beautiful that other people don't even think twice about is, in itself, beautiful. There's so much beauty in the world, even in places you would least expect it to be.
