Hospital Bed

Post by Elissa Sio »

Part 1- Hospital Bed

That’s the smell of disinfectant
That’s the steady buzzing white noise
You can hear the calling of doctors
You can sense cries of little, injured boys.

You wake up to needles in your arm
You know soon you will be dead
The ruthless monitor echoing your countdown
You’re waiting on a hospital bed

Waiting for death and darkness to swallow you
But you don’t know exactly when
You wait in pain endlessly
You’ll just have to suffer until then

You’re trapped in a body
A body that’s not quite yours
You want to travel the world
But you’re caged indoors

You can’t do anything about it
“Your time is coming”, the doctors said
You want to be free
But you’re chained to a hospital bed

Part 2- Sunflower

The pain of your body isn’t enough to forget the pain of your heart.
It isn’t just the world you want to steal,
Its life you want to live
Its love you want to feel

You want to fall in love
To feel the racing of your heart
You want to tell her she’s beautiful
And confess for a start.

But all the words you mutter have blood
The only racing of your heart is fear
All that’s on your face is a ventilation mask
You know there’s nothing now you can steer

You dream of your adventures together
The years that were never meant to be
The time where you held her hands tightly
The day you could one day be free

You watch her in silence everyday
Her smile as radiant as the sun
She recovers day by day
While your organs fail one by one

Sunflower, you call her
For being the brightest
For being most generous
For being the kindest

She spreads hope like sunflower seeds
But some seeds cannot grow true
She believes in your recovery
When in reality, she has no clue

She barges in your room with the widest smile on her face
“I’m discharged” she shrieks.
You want to stroke her, kiss her, smile at her
But all you can do is listen in pain while she speaks.

A pair of beautiful yellow flowers bloomed by your window
“One day we’ll be together too”
Sunflower kisses your hand full of needles
“I’ll be waiting for you.”

Your poem is beautiful and full of emotions. One is hopeful, and the other is contemplating reality. Destiny can be cruel.
