In the place that I grew up in the grass was John Deere green
The river flowed down to the sea and though times were tough and lean

Papa toted seed and corn, Mama was a factory flower
Sirens measured out the shifts and rang from the mill top towers
The days were never ending in those pill-box scattered pastures
The painted ladies fluttered by as if nothing really mattered
