West Country Boy

Post by Cas Greenfield »

West Country Boy by Casimir Greenfield

In the place that I grew up in the grass was John Deere green
The river flowed down to the sea and though times were tough and lean
The skies were wide and open, the trees were oaks and willows
The speckled larks would soar and swoop among the heavens billows

That’s where I come from, that’s where I’m going to
That’s where I come from, this is my home,
The roots go deep, they dive and burrow
They wind and creep through heart and soul,
Heart and soul, blood and thunder, kith and kin, flesh and bone
I’m going back, I’m going back, I’m going back
To my West Country Home

Papa toted seed and corn, Mama was a factory flower
Sirens measured out the shifts and rang from the mill top towers
The days were never ending in those pill-box scattered pastures
The painted ladies fluttered by as if nothing really mattered

I’m going back, I’m going back
(I’m a) West Country Boy
And I’m going home

Now I’m all growed up, as lean as a whippet
As sharp as the tack in my steel capped boots
A dyed in the wool boy looking back at life boy
Digging for the truth while I’m pulling up the roots
I let it pour out in my words and ditties
And I don’t give a damn if you get me wrong
You can take me or leave me when the truth ain’t pretty
But you better believe me, cause the shine has gone
I’ve reaped and sowed through the darkest furrows
Trawled through the deepest seas
Cause when you get to now, you gotta follow that plough
But you’re not gonna bring me to my knees
Let me take my bow in the here and now
I'm a west country boy
Let me take my bow in the here and now
West country boy!
