In the Cathedral Close

Even at noon the shadow of the tower
darkens glistening cobbles' filtered glow,
stern stone sentinel, it seems to know
with its own decades distilled strange power ...
the joys and fears and prayers of those below
lingering a moment or an hour
while hopes half-hover, wither, fade or flower
and faith is shattered, tested, or will grow.
For some just tarry here a while
and then, half-pausing step inside
and gaze upon the altar and the aisle ...
But others hesitate, cannot decide,
then with a sigh, or with a rueful smile
yet still with thoughts they can't entirely hide ....
for now, at least rejoin the every day ....
who knows? Another time, perhaps, they'll stay.
