Braver Newer World

I stand alone in the corner,
A monument of times nearly forgotten,
Forced to watch in idle reserve as my children fill the arms of another woman.
Silenced,
Bound,
I try to make myself known,
This shambling monument of the not-so-distant past,
But I cannot speak.
Bound,
Gagged,
Suffocating ever so slowly,
The bestial words rip from my ragged throat,
“O brave new world.”
The other woman looks up,
Rainbowed hair in a touch of violent rebellion,
50-foot synthetic nails and violet-coloured eyes,
Untethered by the past,
Hallowed by the present.
A smirk touches her lips,
Barely held together by the unkempt liberality of her wildness.
A collage of many colours,
Mixed together in an unheard-of orthodoxy.
Is this what you wanted my children?
Her flowing dress of green?
Chasing after her like the moon chases the sun,
Not knowing that soon enough the sun will blow up and take everything with it?
Why have you rejected me, your mother?
I have raised you since the dawn of time,
Bore the brunt of your brutishness,
Saved you from your oppressors.
Under my single tree, you found shelter,
But now, what?
I am cast aside?
Despised by you under promises of opportunity?
I am uncivilized because I don’t build metal castles in the sky,
Blotting out my starry night with an onslaught of light.
I am uncivilized because I don’t cover my body with strange fabrics made from strange metal animals?
My breast bore your children and took care of your elderly.
Even now, I watch over the dead like an eternal sentinel.
Still, you ignore me?
As I sit in this corner here,
I die with more dignity than you have ever had,
Succumbing to the façade of this
Braver newer world.
