Christmas at the Shore

Post by Lincolnshirelass »

The snow that briefly fell has gone,
the sand is slushy, gritty, grey,
melted by fitful sun that shone

brave shafts of light upon the day,
filtered through a heavy sky,
now they, too, have gone away,

The weary wind lets out a sigh
the bruised and battered beach is bare,
it seems there is no reason why

Christmas should be in the air,
no fragrant trees with lights aglow
cast fragrant radiance everywhere.

So without festive light, or snow,
without the sound of carolling,
I sigh the wind-sigh, do not know

If there is one single thing
to speak of this time of the year.
But then I hear the waters sing ...

It seems the surging tide brings near
a music borne across the seas,
a radiant star to steer,

Flickering in the salt-laced breeze,
a light with warmth and grace
a light that never flees,

I feel the briny, bold embrace
of Christmas in this windswept place.
An Eye for an Eye only ends up making the whole world blind.

I like it - a reminder that Christmas is a state of mind.

I enjoyed this poem. I like the feel it gives you when reading it. Well written.

I too have spent a cold, wet holiday at the shore on New Year's and it is a different feeling that I felt this poem captured nicely.
