Between

Half-dreaming, sleeping fitfully,
I saw above the ice-tipped sea
a copper moon that seemed to be ....

Floating in the velvet dark
of a winter harsh and stark,
surrounded by the starlight spark.

And it was real, yet I was dreaming,
in a warm cocoon, yet seeming
joined with winter moonlight beaming

Down upon the restless sea,
a vast expanse that seemed to be
part of the moonlight and of me.

Was it a dream, or in some way
did I briefly, who can say,
at the border of the day

Glance other reality,
see what I wasn't meant to see?
A deeper sleep came over me.

And I awoke to conscious thought,
so different from the dream, moon-wrought,
and wondered what the night had brought.

So many times dreams leave us in this confused, "it is not possible" state of mind, and we ponder for awhile over coffee or tea, 'til that vulnerability dissipates.

Billy Collins from the poem. HIGH
