The tyranny of the shoulds...and so on

Post by mokey »

In this current economic downturn they asked HR departments who would more likely be hired---someone whose skillset was limited to the job listed or a well read person with desire and limited experience. It seems the latter one. The social currency of being well read is valuable, it seems. So even if we don't read all of the so-called classics a working knowledge of them is essential. As the old commercial said, "try it, you might like it". I have come back to some books that I rebelled against reading, and loved some, hated others. But the ones I disliked I can explain why.

you do have so many classics on there, many of which i LOVE like virginia woolf, but what about mary shelley's frankenstein? she is a really inspiring and thoughtful author who i always enjoyed reading in high school...even her poetry was good, which i normally dont like.

but good list overall! way to include watership down <3 did anyone ever read "tales of the watership down"? such cute and awesome books!

That's an awfully long list. I liked reading in highschool and wouldn't even have read all of that, much less do I think many of my friends that didn't read much would have.

I also think making kids read too many of certain kinds of books that maybe they aren't into can turn them off of reading.

What is that fuzzy thing?? He's adorable!

I'd love for teens to read John G. Neihardt's epic verse. I know. Epic Verse. Yuck. Right? But Neihardt's not your average epic verse, and once teens get hold of a bit of his, they'll never be afraid of epic verse again. And then they'll read The Idylls of the King, which is amazing.
You can't put a rope around the neck of an idea.
