Re: Research study about inner voices people hear while read

Post by hollirm »

As a psychology major(graduating this December), I believe that our inner voice, is our-self giving a voice to the words on a page. For example, MichaelMcManus gave us a quote from Morgan Freeman, if when reading this quote, you hear Morgan Freemans voice, accent, etc., your mind/imagination is replacing your voice with his to help you better understand what is being said or to help you visualize Morgan Freeman actually saying this quote to you. This inner voice, I believe, comes from the same place that your imagination takes you when you are imagining the scenery that your book is describing. I am extremely interested with how this study turns out. I personally believe that there are people out there that don't have/ don't realize they have this internal voice, such as, very straight forward people that don't necessarily read for pleasure. But, Middletown, please keep in mind that you might have an internal validity within your study because of the possibility that a lot of people that would volunteer to do your survey are more likely to be people with similar point of views or like-minded, for example, people from this website, for a book club, all like books and actively exercise their imagination, therefore, it would be reasonable to conclude that their participation in your study by obscure your results. But, I am very interested in what you find out from the study, please tell me know what your H0 and H1 hypothesis was and the results. I'm very excited to find out.
p.s. I also participated in your survey, I hope you find what your looking for. Good luck. ;D

Do people who read for pleasure have inner voices and people who don't read for pleasure not have inner voices?

I think it can depend on how auditory you are as well.
I'm a very auditory person...but I know some people aren't as much.
Even as I read these forum posts my mind creates the different users 'voices' for me.
I find this whole subject very interesting.

Thank you very much for responding to the survey. The survey is still open and responses are still coming in. When it's complete and the results written up, I will be sure to let everyone know.

ALynnPowers and Graverobber, I am also interested in whether certain kinds of readers are more likely to have inner voices. So far, there isn't a conclusive answer.
