I don't really judge a person on what sort of books they read. However what's worse in my opinion, is when people have certain books on their book shelves (e.g Kafka or Dostoevsky) to make people to think that they are clever, when in fact they have no intention of reading these books or indeed understand them.

I think it's best to stay true to yourself and read the books you WANT to read, rather than choose titles you think other people would want you to read.

That reminds me about when in the early part of the 20th century, the Victor record co. put out one-sided Red Seal records with opera singers, Like Caruso, John McCormick and classical music of different kinds. They only had music on one side and sold for a dollar. They were nice looking records, classy red color and in an attractive folder. They targeted people, mostly immigrants who would buy these records to display them to impress people to thinking they had class and culture. Nobody ever played them, they were for show only. Some people didnt even have gramophones to play them on. Victor really cleaned up on that deal, you could buy the regular Victor 2-sided records for 75 cents, sometimes with the same artists and songs that the Red Seal records had. Its the same with books, Ive heard of people putting certain books out for display when they are expecting certain people to visit them, probably books they have never read. Some people are weird.
